Can AI Clones be Successful?

Performance and Challenges of AI Clones:

The AI clone in the video was both successful and unsuccessful in certain aspects of Joanna's life. The AI clone of Joanna Stern did work in some instances, although people were eventually able to tell that AI was being used, like on phone calls. The AI clone had difficulty with arm movements as well as facial expressions, which were major factors that people used to debunk the AI clone. The voice of the AI clone proved to be effective over phone calls and even passed the voice authentication detection of the bank Joanna used. This could pose risks for the potential use of AI in fraud and theft if AI can surpass security measures with important companies such as the places people bank with.

AI was successful with body position and voice replication, as well as reading the prompts and providing accurate information in the TikTok video, but it lacked the qualities and interactions of a real person, and people in the comments were easily able to detect the use of AI in this instance. AI failed to replicate real human interactions, especially in the video call. Her team was easily able to detect the use of AI when the clone proved it was difficult to make responses that were timely and flowed well with the current conversation.

Future Uses and Ethical Concerns Associated with AI:

Potential uses for AI include voice prompts like the TikTok video that Joanna made with AI, as well as the new chatbot service used by Snapchat. These features can be used to help businesses with websites and customer help without the use of a real person all of the time. Ethical issues with AI cloning technology and interactions that people may have with them include things like the use of deepfakes and scams becoming more prevalent and harder for the average person to distinguish from reality. Squarespace says, "Current limitations in AI are a result of the models’ relative novelty" meaning that with improvements website developers like Squarespace will have better uses and features for AI in their company and platform.

The future impact of media with the rising distribution of AI and its uses poses problems for users' privacy and the spread of misinformation. Social media platforms should implement better software to detect the use of AI as well as requirements for people posting AI videos or content that state the content uses AI. According to Squarespace, a website design platform, states, "AI can provide guidance on SEO practices, site layouts, site optimization, and user experience. Moreover, these models can highlight considerations that may be especially important in your client’s specific use case".
